Financial and Political Risks

The world is getting riskier. Besides the threat of terrorist attack and political instability, businesses face credit and political risks as they develop their presence in new markets internationally. And the same applies as their own domestic markets undergo profound change, particularly in some emerging markets.

We have the capacity and specialist expertise to help you understand and manage those risks. Whether you need credit insurance on project or trade contracts, protection or leased assets, cover against unfair calling of bonds, or insurance against kidnap, piracy, expropriation and politically motivated violence, our experience across all areas of financial and political risk provides the best possible protection.

Our team has a background in banking and insurance, as well as a research and intelligence capacity that is unique to the market.

The key to our approach is the relationship where the nature of the risk retained and risks transferred are transparent. This allows us to find the best kind of cover and create bespoke products precisely suited to each client’s situation. We offer continuous, consistent and competitive ways to deal with an ever-riskier world.

How we assess credit and political risks

Our view of the risks we write is based on various sources, including financial ratings and news agencies. We also engage the services of external intelligence consultants who advise us specifically on all risks we entertain.

We consider the macroeconomic perspective of the country in which the borrower is based, along with the government or regime, and the significance of relevant industry sectors in that country.

We also look at trends in the industry sector in which the risk operates and, for credit risk, we examine various criteria relating to the counterparty itself. These include its ownership and financial credentials, its significance to the economy, the nature of its trade as well as any associated political relationships. We also assess how the loan or project is structured.
